Our primary exploration in this class will be how our honest experience of any moment of movement transmits that honesty to others. Classes will begin with a meditative, inward focus to calm the nervous system and cultivate presence. We'll then move into a juicy and thorough warm-up, exploring the articulation of energy through the physical body in different "tones of voice." Class will culminate in playing with possibilities of expression within a longer movement phrase - coloring our dancing from quiet to loud, pedestrian to fully abandoned, visceral, rock-out dancing. And, I will do my best to play good music!

About me: I have spent 24 years fascinated with, perplexed by, & in love with the art of dance. I recently moved to Boulder after 6 years as a devoted member of LEVYdance in San Francisco, creating, teaching, performing, & touring. During that time, I also worked extensively with at-risk youth, public school teachers, & other teaching artists through Performing Arts Workshop, using creative movement and writing as a vehicle for self-knowledge, healing, & education in critical thinking. Prior to this, I danced as a member of Malashock Dance (San Diego) & on tour with Weird Al Yankovic. I have a BA in Dance & English/Creative Writing from Connecticut College, where I worked with David Dorfman, Dan Wagoner, Eddie Taketa, & Jeremy Nelson, among other fantastic teachers. I'm also a Life Coach (www.brookegessay.com) & in Fall '10 will be entering the MFA program in Dance at CU Boulder as an Arts & Sciences Fellow.
